Muharram In Shia Islam | Month of mourning

The month of Muharram in Shi’i faith is significant based on the tragedy of Karbala. Through days leading up to this battle, the day itself, and the weeks after, it was but only pain for the family of the prophet and the companions. Faced with an ultimate decision to either take allegiance to Yazid, Imam Husayn عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ stood by his morals and teachings, and acted only with Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى in his mind. It was through that, not taking an oath to Yazid, where the battle was decided. Imam Husayn عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ voyaged from Medina to Karbala, with no intention of fighting, although the oppressive government would not allow for the family to live in peace. With fear the Imam would reign in power, and the message of true Islamic faith would spread.
